The Challenge

December 05, 2006

Christopher challenged me yesterday to make a post everyday in December because that is what he was doing. Notice how he challenged me to do this on December 4th after I've already missed 3 days of the month. I guess I'll try hard to finish out the rest of December with a post a day. I have compiled a list of reasons why I've had trouble blogging over the last year:

The Top 6 Top 10 Reasons I Don't Blog As Much Anymore

#1 - I got married in March
While I slowly adapt to my new environment, it doesn't seem like much changes for me. In reality, however, marriage does change a persons lifestyle. As I look back over the last year I realize that the amount of free time I have has become very limited. Between work, church stuff, and being married there isn't much time for anything else. I finish my day at work and go home. Kendall and I have to figure out something to eat, we have to go work out at the gym for an hour, we have to take care of the dog, start some laundry, and then we have to watch a couple of our shows that we've recorded on our DVR. By the time all that is done it is 11:00 p.m. and I’m ready for bed. Kendall has already fallen asleep on the couch at 9:30 p.m. so I have to fill her in on what happened with all the shows while she was sleeping. There's not much time to stop and get on the computer to make a blog post and frankly during that part of my evening I don't really feel like doing it anyway.

#2 - I moved into my own house
The second reason I have trouble blogging is because I moved. I was living with my parents and all I had to do when I came home was grab some food my mom had already cooked and then go downstairs to eat, watch TV, and get on the computer. The way my room was set up, my computer was in a place that I could watch TV, do homework and be on the computer all at the same time. At the house Kendall and I have now, my computer is in "the office" on the desk and the TV is in another room altogether. In order to get on the internet I have to drag a 10 foot telephone wire through the hallway and across the living room to plug it in since there is no connection in the office. It makes it such a pain to get on the internet that I don't even bother.

#3 - Saturday and Sunday are limited

Saturday and Sunday will be the toughest days of the week for me to blog because I never get on the computer much during the weekend. It is a rare occasion that I even look at a computer after I leave the office on Friday.

#4 - Future blog posts don't work

There was a point in time that I could use Movable Type to write blog posts and have them post in the future. That feature has been screwed up and doesn't even work anymore. I'm not sure how to fix it and at this point I really don't have the time to mess with trying to make it work. So, in a nutshell, no future posts for me.

#5 - The biggest problem, SPAM

Lets face it, with movable type spam is a problem. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't get tons and tons and tons of spam comments. I don't have time to check the blog every hour to make sure there isn't any nasty spam on my website. So I had to resort to setting my comments up to only post when I approve them. I hate this. I hate the fact that when someone leaves a comment it doesn't show up immediately. I hate that there can't be much discussion on my blog when nobody can see the comments cause I've not had time to check them and approve them yet. I also hate the fact that every time I log into my blog I have to spend at least 10 minutes fishing through spam comments to try and see if there are are at least a couple REAL comments in there. I hate the fact that I often accidentally delete real comments because they get lost in the shuffle of deleting the spam messages. I hate the fact that I had to shut off my e-mail notification when I get a comment because I get so many spam comments that the e-mail was out of control. I would love to leave my comments open so that anyone can leave a comment and it immediately show up. Unfortunately in this world there are too many idiots out there making life crappy for everyone else. I hate spam and the people who cause it and I secretly wish they would all contract some viscous, painful disease and their fingers would rot off.

#6 - My spell check is messed up

I've been using firefox on my mac, but for some reason I can't get the firefox spell check to work. It works fine on my other computers. Maybe that is because someone else installed them for me. This one I can't figure it out. Now I have it all screwed up so that every time I open firefox a stupid weather dialog box pops up that drives me nuts and there is still no spell check. So I have to write my posts in word in order to do a spell check and then when I past my post back into MovableType and post it then all of the words are all messed up in my post. There is some problem with posting info from word where it makes everything look like this... {Testin&*&#$^* one, two thre&^$%#&} This drives me NUTZ! WACKY! And it causes more work for me, which makes writing a blog post take longer, which wastes more of my day, which causes me to not want to write a post. I could just learn to spell, but that probably won't happen and therefore I need a spell checker!

#7 - Not many readers comment

I think that since I stopped posting daily and since I had to shut my comments down that I lost a large amount of readership. I don't think I have many readers left in the blog world and those that may stop by don't ever comment much anymore and even if they did it wouldn't show up until 5 days later when I found time to approve the comment and since I end up posting once a week there isn't a point to even come to my blog anymore and therefore this becomes a vicious cycle. I don't post because readers don't comment and readers don't comment because I don't post. How do we fix that? Blah!

#8 - Formatting is such a pain in MovableType

Another problem is formatting. If I want to make something bold, or italics, or if I want to add a picture then I have to have the right web browser open for one thing and if I want to put my picture in a specific place with the words wrapped around it then I have to be an HTML genius. It's a lot easier with Word Press where you can simply drag your image to where you want it to go. Movable Type just kind of stinks for these types of things. I like pictures as much as the next guy, but I hate that all of them always have to be above or below the text where they just look silly.

#9 - The community has fallen

One of the greatest things about blogging has always been the community. We've always developed a community of friends who we would always go to their website and they would always come to ours. We would have conversations on each others blogs and it was fun to interact and be a part of a blogging community. For me, that has fallen by the wayside. I guess because it requires a specific amount of time and energy that I lost a long time ago. For me the community has fallen and I feel more like a blog outcast than a part of a community of blogs.

#10 - My head hurts

Ever since I whacked myself in the head with a snow shovel the other day I have been dealing with these terrible headaches. I rarely get a headache, but I've had one every single day since the injury. Today I feel that my head is on the verge of aching. It feels like I'm about to go into major headache mode at any second. I figure that by the end of the day I will be popin pain pills once again. This really has nothing to do with blogging, I just couldn't think of a 10th reason.

That is IT! I am dead tired of flippin' excuses! And here I get ten of them in a list of six.

Let me take them head on:

#1 I get this, I really can't do anything about it. Well I can come up with ideas but not being in the situation, I really have no authority there.

#2 I get this, did it six years ago, you get used to it. Much of blogging is done during my cooking times. Of course that then relates back to 1 and I have said what I have said on that already.

#3 Yeah, two of my most difficult days. I am not below re-dating things.

You know what forget, this! This is turning into a post and I haven't posted today...

To the WIT?!?!?mobile. Kill two birds with one stone.
