Exercise To Lose An Extra Size

October 08, 2006

I'm still going strong on my new plan to lose 90 pounds by July. It seems so far away right now. To speed up the process I've started a pretty rigorous exercise program. Coming from the guy who never exercised a lick because I hated it so much, it seems odd that I am now talking about my new exercise routine. I know that I could lose weight with very minimal exercise, but I also know that aerobic exercise and weight training will speed up the weight loss and tone up this flabby, lazy body of mine.

For a couple weeks I was doing aerobic and cardio exercise only. While reading up on exercise and fat burning techniques I discovered that to truly lose inches you need to add some resistance training to your exercise routine. Lucky me, I just joined a Gym that has everything I need. Adding the weight training will help raise my metabolism. How? Well, muscle actually burns way more calories than fat. This means that the more muscle you have, the more calories you'll burn in a days time. It will make me stronger and it will increase my endurance. This is a good thing on so many different levels. The more endurance I build, the longer I can go which will make the weight loss process quicker and more efficient. Being stronger will also help me avoid many different injuries. Weight training improves coordination and balance.

At first I went from walking for 20 minutes a day to walking and running for 30 minutes. Now I'm walking for 20 to 25 minutes, spinning for 20 to 25 minutes, and then weight lifting for another 20 minutes. My 20 minute exercise program has increased to an hour. My wife and I are putting in about 5 to 6 hours of exercise a week. That is 5 to 6 hours more exercise than we were doing just 4 weeks ago. In fact, that is more exercise than I've done for the last 9 years.

The results are wonderful. I've gone down almost two waist sizes in 4 weeks. Even when I'm not losing weight on the scale, I'm still losing weight in the waist. That makes me do a little happy dance. Although in my current condition I would lose my pants if I did that. Last Wednesday night during our youth service I had the hardest time keeping my pants up. As I was talking and moving about the stage my pants just kept creeping lower and lower. I have vowed now to buy new clothes until I'm close to my goal weight, so I will simply have to deal with it for now. It's a good problem to have I guess.

Your strength of conviction is well and good, but do you really plan to wear clothes that don't fit until next Summer? I wouldn't buy a whole new wardrobe, but some in-between clothes would probably be a good idea. At least suspenders!

Well, there could be some embarassing moments. I actually have some older clothes that are smaller, so I may be able to get by without buying anything. Maybe.
