A Day Late & A Dollar Short (The 4th Was Yesterday)

July 05, 2006

We celebrate our freedom on the 4th of July (which was yesterday). I believe this "holiday" has become less of a celebration of freedom and more of a fireworks extravaganza day. The growing generations have no need to celebrate a freedom that hasn't really been in jeopardy for years now. As Americans it seems to me that apathy has become our middle name. Everything is the same, the norm, and it has no feeling left. The 4th of July is simply a holiday where we don't work and instead we spend all our money on fireworks and make things go boom. The same thing can be said for all the other days we supposedly celebrate. My intention here is not to poo poo on anyone's parade. I am simply think we take so much for granted. I also want to make the comparison between our growing apathy in America and our growing apathy in the church. We are not only free as Americans, but we are free as Christians and that freedom came at a great price.

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." - Galatians 5:1

We forget so easily that the freedom we experience in America was fought for with the blood, sweat, and tears of our ancestors and the freedom we have found in Christ was paid for by the blood of an innocent. Jesus died to set us free from sin and we let the burden of sin pull us back down into slavery over and over again. As we remember our freedoms during the 4th of July holiday we need to remember our freedom from the entanglement of sin found only in Jesus Christ who died for us.
