To Be Or Not To Be: Is That The Moral Question?
November 11, 2004
Morality. Was that really the issue at hand with the election? Did the moral attitude of the religious right set the ethical compass for the nation by voting for George W.? Are Christians taking over the United States? How can all these people who claim to "be moral" do this to our nation?
It has been interesting to see where the blame is being placed for the loss of this election. Searching blogs the other day I came across a large number of them who place the blame on Christians. Not just anyone who claims to be a Christian, but the evangelical conservative Christian who votes his values instead of the other issues. For the most part, I just laugh this off and shake my head. However, out of all the blame placed on the Christian community, I take issue with one statement that I hear all of the time. That is the statement that Christians claim to "be moral." I know this could simply be an issue of semantics, but I believe there is a difference between being moral and having morals. To claim to be moral sounds as if we are saying that we are complete moral creatures, without fault or error. This of course is a false claim for any Christian. Hypocrite would be a more suitable term for someone who claims to “be moral.” To have moral values is different. While we may not be perfect ourselves, we do have some moral values that we live by. A person can have some morals and not be completely moral themselves.
Why do I take issue with this? Mainly because I believe a claim to "be moral" is a false claim for a sinner. Any sin that we commit would be immoral. How could a completely moral creature commit an immoral act? Everyone sins and therefore we are not completely moral beings. But, like I said, this could be simply a question of semantics...

I was thinking of posting something similar just yesterday, but I was busy confessing my own sins. Your analysis was great. Having morals and being moral are two different things. The 'Left' will never get it and until they change their policies and beliefs to match the American people, they will continue to look in the rear-view mirror.
You have to remember a sin to a non-believer is just doing something wrong while a sin to a believer is doing something wrong in the eyes of God. A non-believer can never understand. One thing I can say that I have found positive in all this, is our nation is better off spiritually than I thought it was. Maybe this is the start of something great. Just my 2 cents.
Keep 'Leaning Right'
