Avoiding Evil

“Examine everything carefully…abstain from every form of evil.”

At the church we have two G4 Powerbooks, 1 G3 iBook, and 1 G5 PowerMac. Just this last week our iBook bit the dust. I don’t know what happened, all I know is that it suddenly stopped working. When I found out about it the computer had already been sent off to apple to be fixed. Luckily (or is it?) we have apple care. They came and brought a box, picked it up, and shipped it off which was nice. Unfortunately just the other day the computer came back and it wasn’t fixed.

The sheet of paper they included with the package said basically they couldn’t contact us and the problem isn’t covered by apple care. Then under that line it said Logic Board. I had two problems with this. Number one, if apple care does not cover the logic board then what in the world does it cover? What are we paying $300 for, if they aren’t going to fix the logic board? The second problem I had was the fact that they said they couldn’t contact us. Our church has a secretary answering the phone from 9a.m. to 5p.m. and we have a voicemail system to answer the phones when nobody is there. It is impossible that the “couldn’t contact us.” These things frustrated me and so I called apple to blow off a little steam at them, but of course my conscience and spirit allowed my mercy to set in and so I ended up being nice. That always happens to me. I work myself up to go postal on someone and when it comes time to explode I soften up.

Anyway, I called apple and asked what the deal was. First off they said that the people couldn’t contact us because they didn’t have a contact name. The problem with the computer was filed under Temple Baptist Church and didn’t have a personal name associated with it, so they just sent the computer back and didn’t bother to call. Does that make sense to anyone? That is so odd. Secondly they told me that the logic board was actually busted at the Ethernet jack. The logic board is connected to the motherboard and so they have to replace both for $709.00.

I’m not sure that we are going to fix the computer when we can buy a new iBook G4 for just a few hundred dollars more than that. So what is the moral of the story? When you call apple care make sure you give them a contact name so that they can call you before sending your product straight back without fixing it. Secondly, don’t accidentally break your logic board, or you’ll be replacing your motherboard.

Peace out!

  1. Andrew Said,

Good to know, seeing as my iMac should be arriving in the mail by Thursday.

    Thanks for the info.

  2. Timothy R. Butler Said,

Well, for whatever small comfort it provides, there is a good reason why they cannot replace the logic board without replacing the motherboard… that’s because logic board and motherboard are synonymous terms in the case of Apple computers.

Why they made a distinction is beyond me.

Perhaps next time, you should tell whoever was using that laptop not to use ethernet… if you stick to Wi-Fi you can’t break anything. :)
Sorry to hear about the problem, all kidding aside.

  3. pressed Said,

That is quite odd. They made a distinction between the two. Apparently this guy didn’t really know what he was talking about.
