Avoiding Evil

“Examine everything carefully…abstain from every form of evil.”

I was having an MSN discussion with an old friend of mine and we were talking about life and the past and what God had taught us in our lives and he shared something very insightful with me. He said, “I tried to make things work when they obviously wouldn’t.” Now, to a normal person, this wouldn’t seem all that exciting or thought-provoking, but to me, WOW!!! So I came up with a great analogy…here it is.

Often, in life, we try to choose the path we think is best. We choose the relationships we think will be the best, the occupation that fits us most, the location to live…often without consulting the Creator who has the most awesome plan ever, and is just waiting on us to let go. We stumble through life, trying to piece together a future for ourselves, so often missing the mark, sometimes irreversibly.

This, to me, is like a puzzle. There are millions of pieces to choose from, and we can pick any that we’d like to stick together. When you put together two pieces that don’t match, no amount of squeezing or bending or smashing will change the fact that they weren’t meant to be together. This is what we do when we choose our will instead of God’s. Nothing ever really fits together like a puzzle, we have some odd pieces, and sometimes, the piece is missing, altogether.

How do we remedy this situation? Just like in a real puzzle, patience is the key to finding the right piece. We must wait on God to answer our prayers and to guide us in the right direction. He doesn’t promise that it will be immediate or how we think we’d like it to be, but He does promise us a hope for the future and blessings if we will only follow His will.

Stop trying to fit together random pieces of life and instead, give the pieces to the one who created the puzzle in the first place!
