A Very Wet Day!

Posted by Pressed under File 13 (General Topics)

It has rained from the moment I woke up this morning, and is still raining right now. I have actually enjoyed it. I have two huge windows in my office and this morning I opened the shades in order to see the rain, and the blooming trees that sit right outside. It was nice… especially without the sun glaring in and burning me alive, which is the case on sunny days. I really hate it when at the end of the day I realize that I did absolutely nothing all day long, but can’t figure out how I got by with 13 hours of nothingness. I accomplished nothing today. No work, no school work, nothing at all. In fact, it really aggravates me! What a waste.

I did get to take a peek at the DVD for this summer’s VBS, “Rickshaw Rally.” I am going on a mission trip in June where we will be conducting two vacation Bible school’s in two different parts of Wyoming, and getting a Christian camp ready that is located up in the mountains. I was under the impression that I was going to be leading the music and so I wanted to see the motions to the songs. Later in the day Scott (my pastor) came in with some excellent news, I am going to be the VBS Pastor for that site and I will not have to lead the music. WOO! Please excuse my sudden outburst of excitement. Summer for me looks pretty crazy. On the 4th of June I will leave for Wyoming and return to Missouri on the 12th. On the 13th of June I will go to the SBC in Indiana and won’t come home until the 16th. Then I will leave again on the 18th to take our youth to Denver, CO and won’t be back home until the 26th. I think I will be using my two weeks of paid vacation this year! Shew! I am really excited about both of these mission trips this year. I can’t wait.

On another quick note, I did start working on a new post tonight dealing with the characteristics of scripture. I want to focus on the inerrancy of scripture and why I believe the bible is inerrant. I know I won’t have that post finished tonight… just a heads up to you that I am working on it. Right now, however, I am going to turn in early and go to bed.

Pressed - “The Sluggard”

Authority

In the Old Testament the bible frequently claimed that the words of scripture were His words, “Thus says the Lord.” This statement was very similar to the edicts of the kings in that time period. When the king said something it had to be done because he was the authority. Prophets who say “Thus says the Lord” are pointing out that these words are the direct authoritatve words of God. God spoke through the prophets to the people. Even in the New Testament you find claims that all of the Old Testament writings were God’s words. 2 Timothy 3:16 “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” The word for scripture (graphe) refers to the Old Testament all 51 times it is used, including this usage.

Gearing Up… Literally

Tonight, out of the blue, I went to my dads house and we started talking about guns. I am getting ready for turkey season and I was asking about some of the guns that we have at the house. While broaching the subject I suddenly had this feeling building up inside of me. A very familiar feeling that often overtakes me in moments like this and the next thing I know we are in the truck driving to look at some guns. We went to a pawn shop, a gun shop, Wal-mart, and then drove an hour to Galyans, and then another 30 minutes to Bass Pro. Finally at Bass Pro I found a wide selection of guns that I just happened to be interested in.

I must tell you, I have a very difficult time making decisions. I have been wanting a new shot gun for a long time now but I never could bring myself to spend the money. Tonight, however, I had the bug and was determined to buy one. The only problem was there were several different choices and I just couldn’t make a decision. After nailing it down to two different guns I began to ponder the pros and cons of both. One was a Remington 870 Express 12 Gauge with this brand new camo pattern that I really liked. If I bought that gun I would have to buy a choke tube, a swivel kit, and a strap, which was an extra $75 on top of the $400 price tag. However, Bass Pro was having a big sale on another gun that was way cheaper than the Remington and it came with its own choke tube, strap, hard case, and all… My problem was that this other gun was not a big name brand and was not as tight and well built as the Remington… But it was cheaper. *sigh* So I walked around for about an hour trying to decide what I wanted to do. In the mean time my dad was going insane wanting me to hurry up and pick one.

After we had been there well over an hour I finally go back up to the counter and begin asking a few more questions. Within just a few minutes I had purchased a new gun. Unfortunately it was a completely different gun than the two I had pondered over for an hour and a half. I came away from bass pro with a Remington 870 SPS-T Super Mag shot gun. It came with choke tubes, a swivel strap, and is completely covered in Mossy Oak Camo. I now have a lot less money too… I have to say a small word of thanks to the government for giving me my tax money back and allowing me to purchase this nice new turkey gun. As for making decisions… I don’t know what to do with myself.

Ain’t It A Shame?

Posted by Pressed under Life In The Ministry

I have been really careful about worship music lately. I am a firm believer that we learn what we sing, therefore when we choose songs for a Sunday or Wednesday night service we are teaching people theology through those songs, good or bad. We have quite a few praise songs that completely contradict scripture and theology. In our fast past culture we try to make things relevant or even write words that grip our emotions and sing those words proudly and even tearfully completely unaware that they contradict scripture itself. It’s amazing. However I have recently learned that this is not a new problem at all.

Look at this song from the 1956 Heavenly Highways Hymnbook which was a Stamps-Baxter Publication. This songbook was used intimately in our churches during this time period and many Bible believing congregations sang this song.

Aint it a shame

Ain’t it a shame to work on Sunday
Ain’t it a shame a working shame.
Ain’t it a shame to work on Sunday,
Ain’t it a shame a working shame.
Ain’t it a shame to work on Sunday.

When you got Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday,
and you got Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, ain’t it a shame.

Ain’t it a shame to joy ride Sunday,
Ain’t it a shame a joy ridin’ shame.
Ain’t it a shame to joy ride Sunday,
Ain’t it a shame a joy ridin’ shame.
Ain’t it a shame to joy ride Sunday.

When you got Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday,
and you got Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, ain’t it a shame.

Ain’t it a shame to lie on Sunday,
Ain’t it a shame a lying shame.
Ain’t it a shame to lie on Sunday,
Ain’t it a shame a lying shame.
Ain’t it a shame to lie on Sunday.

When you got Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday,
and you got Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, ain’t it a shame.

Ain’t it a shame to gossip on Sunday,
Ain’t it a shame a gossiping shame.
Ain’t it a shame to gossip on Sunday,
Ain’t it a shame a gossiping shame.
Ain’t it a shame to gossip on Sunday.

When you got Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday,
and you got Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, ain’t it a shame.

Folks, did you catch that? You have Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday to lie and gossip! WHAT IN THE WORLD? People would sing this song like it was no big deal, but I bet if you preached a message that said you could lie and gossip every day of the week except for Sunday you would be fired, and yet the very song they sang was probably how they lived.

We need to be careful about the words of the songs we sing. Do they honor and glorify God while teaching his truth or are they a contradiction with a catchy tune?

Word & Way - The Phantom Issue

Posted by Pressed under MBC & SBC

If you have ever subscribed to the Word & Way and you still live at the same address, chances are you received a paper last week. Anyone that has been on the Word & Way mailing list received a FREE issue! I have a few friends who have not received one of these papers for over 5 years now and then suddenly after 5 years of silence a newspaper shows up at their door. Why, you ask? I was asking myself the same thing. At first I was simply surprised that I had received a copy of this paper, and then it struck me as being very strange. Word & Way is one of the five institutions who decided to slip out of the accountability of the Missouri Baptist Convention by changing their charters to make their trustee’s a self electing board. On March 11, 2004 Judge Thomas Brown ended the lawsuit the Missouri Baptist Convention filed against these five institutions on the basis that the Executive Board and the six convention-affiliated churches do not have the legal standing to file the lawsuit. He ruled in this manner because the convention charter states that the convention is made up of messengers and not the executive board or churches. As soon as this happened the Word & Way immediately jumped on the opportunity at hand. They published several articles and letters dealing with the convention and then mailed the finished product to almost everyone who has ever been on their mailing list. The newspaper has a special little note on the back that basically says, we want to bring Missouri Baptists up to date on new developments in the convention so examine this paper carefully and if you like what you see we also included a subscription form…

This whole thing sounds fishy to me, but I “carefully examined this issue” anyway. Here’s what I found:

The first thing you set your eyes on is the front page article which is titled “Judge dismisses MBC lawsuit.” This is a very informative article on what happen in the lawsuit and why the judge dismissed it. No problem with this article, until the end. At the very end of the article the Word & Way says the leadership of the 5 agencies has collectively said that they “just want to put the case behind them and focus on ministry.” Larry Johnson (the Baptist Home), R. Alton Lacey (Missouri Baptist University), Jim Smith (Baptist Foundation), and Frank Shock (Windermere) are quoted in this article, each one basically saying that they are glad the lawsuit is over so that they can focus on their jobs and ministry. I smell agenda. After just writing about how the task force of the convention is not going to quit they then write about how glad each agency is that the lawsuit is over so they can focus on ministry. It certainly makes the agencies sound like they are victims in this matter.

On the left side of the paper is a little box that explains, to the shocked and dumbfounded person who is holding the Word & Way, why they have received this issue. 1. “because it contains important news that effects Missouri Baptist life” - Apparently, Missouri Baptists, this is very important news. The Word & Way wouldn’t go to all of the trouble of spending extra money to print all of these extra issues and send them to people who are not subscribers for nothing! Just everyday, average Baptist news is not worth that, no this issue is special folks. Never mind the fact that we have our own newspaper, it is the Word & Way’s job to inform us of the latest information. Isn’t this odd? 2. “because we are interested in re-acquainting you with an old friend, the Word & Way.” What are you saying? Do you want more subscribers? Do you want us to see some changes you have made to the paper, see how much you cover, how balanced and fair you are, and come running back to you begging for forgiveness for ever leaving? Are you trying to make us feel guilty? Ok, so maybe I am being a bit extreme here, but I smell a rat!

The ‘letters’ section of the paper is clearly one-sided. One letter they published is about the “tragedy” of spending money on these lawsuits. Getting the word out to all Missouri Baptists that the convention is wasting money on lawsuits, and that money could be used for ministry. This person wanted to tell every Missouri Baptist to call the Executive Board and MBC officers to let them know that we don’t want to waste anymore money. Which is a good idea if the majority of Missouri Baptists believe that perusing this lawsuit is not a just cause… however, I believe it was the Messengers of the Missouri Baptist Convention who in fact voted for the spending of this money. So that is a great idea. Lets all call up and harass the Executive Board for doing something we told them to do. This letter ended with a plea for all Missouri Baptists to call their executive board to tell them to stop “persecution of these Missouri Baptists institutions.” Stop persecution? Once again, they are the victims.

The second letter dealt with some of the same issues, and is a voice from the CBF. “this period of unprecedented legal attack” The Fellowship Baptists claim that they have been unwavering in their support for the institutions while the convention has been attacking them. Once again, the agencies are the victims here.

Another thing I noticed about the Word & Way that was quite different about the paper from the last time I received one is the large articles written about the ministries of each of the 5 institutions. What better way to make these institutions look like victims than by showing how much wonderful ministry they are accomplishing while the convention is ‘attacking and persecuting’ them. Two half-page Windermere adds, two MBU articles, an article on the Baptist Foundation and a half-page add for the foundation, a large article on the Baptist Home with a picture of some smiling, happy seniors, and another half-page add for the Baptist Home. Maybe it is just me and I have been away from the Word & Way too long, but it certainly looks like they stepped up their coverage of these 5 institutions. In fact, the overwhelming majority of the paper itself is articles and adds dealing with these 5 institutions and articles dealing with the lawsuits against them.

Bill Webb, the editor of Word & Way, stated the paper’s mission, “We exist to provide Baptists with accurate, timely, relevant information with BALANCED reporting.” Excuse me Bill, but did you just say balanced? I don’t remember seeing any articles in the Word & Way that showed the Executive Board and the MBC official’s viewpoints. I don’t remember seeing any articles that sided for the conventions actions or offered any explanation from leaders of the convention. I don’t remember seeing any articles that reveal why the agencies changed their charters. I don’t remember seeing any articles that stated any of the good things the convention is doing. What exactly is your definition of balanced?

Folks,if the timing and content of this particular issue of the Word & Way doesn’t raise some red flags in your mind, then I don’t know what will. It seems to me that this papers is at the very least trying to raise concern and maybe even a little bit of confusion among Missouri Baptists, attempting to ’stir the pot’ if you will. I certainly don’t see them living up to their mission of ‘balanced reporting.’ If you received the issue of Word & Way I would encourage you to read it, but do so with caution.
