Authority
In the Old Testament the bible frequently claimed that the words of scripture were His words, “Thus says the Lord.” This statement was very similar to the edicts of the kings in that time period. When the king said something it had to be done because he was the authority. Prophets who say “Thus says the Lord” are pointing out that these words are the direct authoritatve words of God. God spoke through the prophets to the people. Even in the New Testament you find claims that all of the Old Testament writings were God’s words. 2 Timothy 3:16 “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” The word for scripture (graphe) refers to the Old Testament all 51 times it is used, including this usage.
